Best Ways To Stop Being Overwhelmed

What does it mean to be overwhelmed? If you look in the dictionary you will find that it says to bury or drown beneath a huge mass. My definition is very similar but maybe a little more philosophical. In my perspective, to be overwhelmed means to be in a state of total stress and anxiety. It means putting yourself in a place where you feel that you cannot breath and you cannot get a moment to rest. I like to speak on this matter because I have a lot of personal experience regarding stress and anxiety which are both emotions or biochemical reactions to being overwhelmed.

For the last couple of years I have experienced high tension moments where I have had anxiety attacks, so I have come to many conclusions on how to control the human response to certain situations. Of course it is easier to control things that you can control, and it is more difficult to let go of the things that you cannot control. For example, if you’ve just been laid off at your job you may experience emotions of stress and worry. You may feel slightly overwhelmed by not having a job anymore, and then your mind will go into the future and think of all the things that could go wrong and all of a sudden you feel extremely overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. In this situation it is easy to let your mind slip to the dark side and start thinking of all the negative possibilities and outcomes that await you. It is hard to let go of that situation, to let go of those co-workers, to let go of that boss, to let go of that income, to let go of that security, but with every challenge and obstacle that life throws at us, there is greater things laying on the other side. Although it may seem difficult to find the positive when you are stressed out, look for it and it is my absolute promise to you that you will find it.

Catch yourself in those lapses of judgment when you’re about to eat that donut or when you’re about to start that argument just to be right. Really train your mind to do what is right in that moment. For it is not the body that controls the mind but the mind that controls the body. Work on yourself each and every day. This is the surest way to get yourself out of a state of being overwhelmed and into a state of pure bliss and happiness.

Progress leads to happiness.
